It provides a broad, modern and accessible introduction to economics, political economy and international and financial economics in a long-term perspective. This edition provides a detailed description of the financial crisis that began in the United States, spread to many countries, and developed into a debt crisis in Europe.

Several chapters are updated - for example, those on labor markets, trade and financial flows, global inequality, the distribution of carbon emissions across countries, and the conclusions of the Durban climate summit. New research findings are presented on how state and market complement each other in that state fiscal and legal capacity promotes economic development.

The analysis of the impact of democracy, dictatorship, conflict and war on the economy has taken into account new findings.
